Isn’t this a moot issue already? Universal said today that it, too, is going the Blu-ray-only route. In so many words:

While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray

Moot because Toshiba had said earlier today that it was pulling out of the HD DVD business, handing the high-def disc “victory” to Blu-ray and Sony.

No details other than that now, like how this affects already-authored HD DVDs yet to be released, but expect Hollywood to go all out in the coming days to further distance itself from HD DVD.

It’s amazing how one studio’s decision carried so much weight, completely changing the landscape of that phony war.

Some of you might remember Gizmondo as the almost-vaporware-like handheld gaming device that was the brainchildfart of some Swedes, notably Stefan Eriksson, who later totaled a rare Ferarri Enzo almost exactly two years ago today.

Now more details are emerging about Gizmondo’s rumored comeback, sans Eriksson, and it looks like the wheels have started to turn. In an interview on the blog Nordic Link, blogger Hans Sandberg has a nice chat with Gizmondo’s Carl Freer about the return of a new version of the device, production, and the company’s executives’ links to organized crime. It’s a good read and worth it: A new Gizmondo might shake things up when it launches later this year. The original wasn’t all that bad but was sadly overshadowed by the exploits of its masters.

It’s in our inbox, so that’s good enough for us to call it. At 12:14AM PST, HD DVD is no longer supported by Toshiba, effectively killing the format. The release states that Toshiba will focus instead on “championing consumer access to HD content”.

No more players, no more disks, no more HD DVD.

So now we can all purchase our PS3s and wait for the day when Transformers shows up on Blu-ray, the official next gen disc format for HD video.
