It appears that Nokia is readying its official response to the iPhone, a project grossly codenamed “Tube” that’ll feature a touch interface. The new handset — which is stated to closely resemble Apple’s device (see above, we assume) — was shown during a slideshow at the Evans Data Developer Relations Conference in Redwood City, California. The slide demonstrated the phone’s UI, including a promotional shot featuring Shrek The Third. Tom Libretto, vice president of Forum Nokia, believes that the company can compete for the iPhone’s marketshare, though the phone-maker hasn’t set a street date for the device. Apple has sold more than 4 million units since the iPhone’s launch, but Libretto smugly noted that, “We’ve done that [volume] since we’ve had dinner on Friday,” (though he failed to mention that it was 4 million low-end candybar handsets). He then put on a monocle, puffed on a Cuban cigar, and knocked back a tall glass of Cristal while chortling, “Oh, I do state!”
[Thanks, Alex]

Okay, seriously, Sony Ericsson, it seems pretty clear-cut that your closely held secrets have leaked out into the public domain here — either that, or there’s a pretty extensive conspiracy in the user community to fleece everyone with similar-looking fake shots — and either way, it’s about time you step forward and clear the air. This here’s the latest shot of the so-called Paris that’s floating around the interwebs, and while the screen looks more fake than ever, the phone itself matches up nicely with what we’ve seen before. With UIQ 3.3 in the cards, this could be the phone that finally takes the “other” Symbian platform from niche to glamor and glory, but only if the mothership can get it released in a timely fashion. That’s you, Sony Ericsson, so get to it.

We meandered through Nokia’s booth at CTIA Wireless last week in search of interesting wares, and came back with pretty positive results. Allowed, nothing starting with “N” or “E” was announced at the show — unless you count the N810 WiMAX Edition, which we don’t — but there was still plenty of unreleased kit at the show, including the N78, the 6210 Navigator, and a pair of really sleek CDMA flips. Talking of the CDMA flips, the 1606 and 3606 headlined Nokia’s CTIA intros — and we’ve gotta admit, we were surprisingly pleased with the hardware. The designs are beautiful, smooth, clean, slim, and unlike anything we’ve seen out of Espoo in the past; they’re worthy efforts for a company that pays very little mind to the world of CDMA, and a merciful sign that the painful Pantech partnership era appears to be over.
