We got our grubby mitts all over the latest and greatest from Sony Ericsson, including that new C905 8 megapixel monstrosity, and, of course, the Xperia X1. The C905 is certainly no slouch in the camera department, with that for-serious Xenon flash and dedicated camera keys, but you’ll pay for it in thickness — the C905 is a good deal thicker than its Walkman counterparts, though that does leave room for a nicely formed slide-out keypad. The C905 is capable of geotagging pictures, but can’t upload on the fly to photo services just yet like Nokia’s new phones, though such ability is in the works. While the C905 seems finely honed for a specific purpose, the Z780 flip phone seems much more plain jane in comparison, with a rather huge size despite its “slim proportions” and a lack of detailing in styling to make it really pop. But, of course, who needs all that featurephone nonsense when you’ve got the X1 staring ‘em all down? We got to twiddle around with an out-of-battery Xperia for a minute, and it’s certainly one of the thickest and heaviest phones headed for the market in the near future — though the upside of that is some glorious build quality, an immense WVGA screen and an expansive, highly touchable keyboard. SE certainly does seem to have something for everybody, but with Moto apparently working on an 8 megapixel camera of its own, and touchscreen rivals to the X1 hogging all the spotlight, SE’s isn’t looking at an simple road to bumping back that profitability. Oh, and in case you were interested, the gallery below also includes the W760 sporting a black finish, a pink-ish red-ish W580 and the wonderfully little W350i.

A Windows HPC Server installation is ranked as the 23rd fastest supercomputer in the world according to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. The machine, which has over 9,472 nodes, hit 68.5 teraflops in trials.
Similarly, personal scientists at Umea University in northern Sweden, also working with the beta version of Windows HPC Server 2008 on their supercluster, reached 46 teraflops and 85.5 percent efficiency on 5,376 cores, making their system the second-largest Windows cluster ever deployed and the fastest academic cluster in Sweden. Umea University will run the new supercomputer at its facility known as HPC2N. The university’s cluster employs 672 IBM blade servers, and also marks the first time that Windows HPC Server 2008 has been run publicly on IBM hardware.
This is some serious iron here, people. The little thing where you make all the open windows appear on the screen when you hit windows-tab? Windows Flip 3-D? It’s like buttah.

Let’s be honest. We’ve seen this coming for more than a month now and the Financial Times is reporting that VM and Helio could announce sometime this week that the two MVNOs will merge leaving SK Telecom with a 20 percent stake. There have been rumors floating around that Helio stores will shut their doors in an effort to cut costs, which we haven’t been able to confirm nor deny, but we’re pretty sure they’re true. We’re unsure which stores will close, but I’d like to think that the NYC store that’s 200 meters away from me will remain open. We’ll have to wait and see, though. Now that all this merger nonsense is over with, I’d like for Helio to release OZ2.
Reuters is also reporting on this matter. Sources state Helio will be absorbed into the Virgin Mobile brand. Maybe we won’t see OZ2 with the backlit Helio name. I guess I’m ok with Virgin.
